Abortion vs. Economy

The day of the election, Bishop John H. Ricard of the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee sent Vice-Presidential candidate Joe Biden an open letter to examine his conscience before receiving communion. His impetus for sending this letter was that at one point Biden campaigned and went to Mass in his diocese. If you check out the front page of the diocese's website, one will find the letter, but nothing about the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

Once again, the American bishops are showing themselves to be a one-issue episcopate that is failing to make use of a vast treasury of Catholic social teaching that could be helpful in rebuilding the economy. The bishops could find themselves an important and needed player on the national scene. They could use the economy as a stepping stone to rebuild their credibility with the American people, but instead they simply harp on an issue that concerns sexuality. And believe me, the average American could care less about what the bishops think regarding that issue.

You are accusing the "average American Catholic" of worshipping false gods.

Just a little slanderous?

F.C. you are so right. My wife comes from a strong catholic family that goes way back. Even her family paid little attention to bishop talk. And today our bishop is viewed only as an administrator. As I have shown so clearly on my blog, the bishops try to maintain their position by running a veritable anti-sex crusade. Of course, they cover it, but it seems so obvious to all non-catholics and to most catholics. Jack

Why would the average guy in the pew take his marching (voting) orders from the bishops when THEY can't even agree and are fighting like cats and dogs amongst themselves? They draw up Faithful Citizenship then a bunch of them bolt for a microphone to "clarify" its meaning. Message: Don't pay any attention to FC, do what *I* tell you to do! Here's a list of things to consider when voting but you can't really vote on any of them because I command you to consider only ABORTION or roast in hell. Worried about the economy? war? environment? education? healthcare? FORGET ABOUT IT! Think only of ABORTION. The bishops appear to be living in an alternate universe.

The state of the human soul is of much more concern than financial responsibility. It is not the job of the bishops to work on the economy. It is our government and our own personal responsibility which is lacking.

P.S. Abortion should be of main concern. Of course it's easy to say it doesn't matter when you have escaped the horrors of abortion thanks to your mother's decision and you already have a life to live. It's one of the genocides of today. The devil is good at corrupting baptized souls, so why wouldn't he work on preventing a soul from being baptized at all? God help us in fighting this evil.
