Benedict has certainly been a roller coaster ride. With his theological background and his meeting with persons like Hans Kung, I had hoped that he would begin appointing a higher grade of bishop than John Paul II.
The Vatican announced on Saturday that Gerhard Wagner will become auxiliary bishop of Linz, Austria. Back in 2005, Wagner stated that Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment because of homosexuality in New Orleans. Maybe he didn't get the memo, but the hurricane mostly hurt poor black people. This seems like a throwback to those bishops who originally thought that AIDS was God's punishment of gay people. This kind of bishop seems completely out of tune with the Gospel message of Jesus. 1) People are not sick because of God's wrath and 2) Jesus' mission is one of healing and reconciliation. I cannot understand Benedict's motivation for appointing a priest with such blatant incompetance.

As a matter of fact, Bp. Wagner did NOT say that "because of homosexuality....Katrina."
You could at least learn to read your sources clearly.
Okay, what did he say about homosexuality or Katrina? Jack
BTW, that picture looks like a bad broadway musical or a float in a gay parade.
Doesn't the Papacy predate gay parades and broadway musicals?
Also you did not report what Wagner actually said, I take it you don't speak German or if you do, you did not care to go to the sources.
I seem to be caught between "dad","catholic wintertime," and "anon." What did Bishop Wagner say? Jack
Jack, I don't bother responding to your questions.
So don't bother asking them.
My second question was not necessarily directed to you.
By your response I suspect you are a big blow bag 'caught in the act.' Jack
I must admit that I have not read the German, but I consider the BBC to be a reliable news source.

BBC, eh?
Why not Pravda?
F.C.: "Back in 2005, Wagner stated that Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment because of homosexuality in New Orleans. Maybe he didn't get the memo..."
The memo in Luke 13:2-5 (NAB)? "Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were greater sinners than all other Galileans? By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did! Or those eighteen people who were killed when the tower at Siloam fell on them--do you think they were more guilty than everyone else who lived in Jerusalem? By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did!"
