Indulgences Won't Go Away

According to a Vatican decree signed by Cardinal Stafford and Bishop Girotti, the upcoming World Youth Day in Australia will provide Catholics with the opportunity to receive indulgences. Plenary indulgences (complete remission of sin for the moment) will be granted to those who come to the youth day in a spirit of pilgrimage. Partial indulgences will be available for those you pray for a good outcome from the day.

I cannot understand why the Vatican continues to make indulgences available. They will not allow communal absolution, but will allow what is the equivalent of absolution for those attending the youth day. Ergo, if a bomb dropped on them during that day, they would all go straight to heaven. This is simply bad theology and represents the superstitious portion of Catholic thought.

I think indulgences come from the good intention of explaining how our actions are an important aspect of our faith and relationship with God, but this is an embarrassment that is more comparable to a magic show than religion.

You say an indulgence is remission of sin.

Catechism 1471 says,
"What is an indulgence?
"An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven..."

TB,

Thank you for the clarification. You are correct. I was just trying to keep it simple

As a 22 year old new catholic, maybe I took too many hits on the football field. I live with Jack and Alice and their family. Jack comments here at times.I just can not follow this indulgence thing. Will someone try to explain to me? Frank

Compared to the Resurrection, the "magic" of indulgences is low-level stuff.

"I live with Jack and Alice and their family."

Mr. Haynes might have mentioned that, in passing, at some point.

"I just can not follow this indulgence thing. Will someone try to explain to me?"

Already done in the Catechism, starting at 1471, through 1479.

Mr. Berres. Thanks for trying to help me. I study this more because I still do not fully understand. I am not sure what you mean about Jack mentioning me. I live with Jack and Alice and their daughter, her husband, and grandkids. Jack and Alice completely support me and pay for my college. Jack has ask me not to look at his blog for a while. I have done some real bad things in the past, but they are like my mom and dad. Frank

Faithful Catholic,

You are aware that a Plenary Indulgence requires Sacramental Confession and Absolution too, right?
