Maybe I'm being overly optimistic about Benedict, but I have the feeling that part of the reason for Archbishop Burke's appointment as Prefect of the Supreme Court of the Apostolic Signature at the Vatican is to get him out of the spotlight. Seriously, what harm can he actually do as in this position? This court mostly handles marriage cases, which will probably be pretty clear cut from a canon law point of view.
Benedict may have his strong conservative opinions, but he does not appear to be the persecutor that John Paul II made him out to be. Benedict does not want the Catholic Church viewed as a persecutor church, such as Burke was doing in St. Louis and making national headlines in his wake. Benedict is the type of bishop who meets with Hans Kung. Benedict is more of a bridge-builder than a bridge-destroyer. So perhaps I am mistaken, but I think that Benedict had enough of reading Burke headlines in the NY Times and decided to give him a desk job would he can no longer to any real harm.

Isn't the holder of this "desk job" usually also soon made a cardinal? If so, Archbishop Burke will have a vote if there's a need to elect any popes between now and June 30, 2028.

JPII died five months after Burke's installation in St. Louis. Elevations to Cardinal often take place more than six months after installation. JPII may have fully intended to make Burke a cardinal, but did not have the time or the good health to do it.

Plus as for Cardinal Burke in St. Louis, Americans do have a disproportionate number of Cardinals in the United States, I believe the previous Archbishop of St. Louis was not a Cardinal either. St. Louis isn't what it once was in terms of Catholic city. Houston and the South is really moving up in that regards, thanks in part to immigration.
Clearly Benedict wanted him out of here before the campaign kicked off 'officially' this fall. Maybe he heard via the grapevine that Burke planned to stage a mass excommunication of all Obama supporters in the diocese of St. Louis which would land him in the headlines again. He planned to kick it up a notch this year since that withholding communion stuff was getting sort of stale.

Yes indeed, anyone who isn't politically in tune with Archbishop Burke and Dad29 should be burned at the stake. It's the Christian thing to do! First we round them up behind barbed wire, next some water boarding to get them to come around and if that doesn't work we commence building the fire for the Final Solution. We can sell tickets and donate the money to Focus on the Family. I say we get started right away.
